Question 2: Answers. To check or not?

Do you check every pair of answers whenever you solve simultaneous linear equations? If you only check selectively, which kind of answers do you usually check?

How do you do your checking? Can you think of a faster way to do the checks?

  3. If I ran out of time I would only check the weird answers. If got x= 4 54/73 then I would check that before something like x = 2.

  4. I usually try my best to check every questions. But there are times when there is no sufficient time to check all my answers. So what I do is actually to check all those answers which I am not that confident of, like all the answers which end up having fractions or repeating decimals. Normally when i check my answers, i would usually re-do the questions again using pencil at the side of the paper and compare to see whether both answers are the same. I think that instead of wasting time to re-do the questions by writing down again, we could do it mentally. These method might only work if the numbers are small and the questions are not that complicated. For stimultaneous linear equations, we usually check to see whether our answers are correct by substituting back into the equation. We could probably do this mentally and need not waste time to write it down. =)

  5. No. I usually check those answers that are fractions or decimals so as to ensure that there are no mistakes in my solutions and that the solutions are completely correct. Normally, teachers will tend to give us simultaneous equations' questions which have integers for the final answers. Hence, I would like to make sure that the answers like fractions and decimals are right. I do my checking by substituting my final answers or solutions into the equations that I have. Then if the left hand side of the equation is equal to the right hand side of it, I can say definitely that my solutions are right. A faster way I think I can do the checks is by substituting the solutions into the simpler equations which mean that the numbers in the equation is smaller than the rest of the equations so that I can do it mentally in the case of exams as we have limited time to complete a whole paper.
